The Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children
Education Administration Programs in United States
Overview
The Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children (DABC) was created to increase awareness of dyslexia and related learning disabilities, promote early identification, and increase access to research-based intervention for Black children. Black children are disproportionately impacted by the negative effects of unaddressed dyslexia resulting in academic failure, low self-esteem, and decreased quality of life participation. We are parents, educators, and allies driven by the urgent call to address the double disparity of dyslexia and race.
The Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children (DABC) is a national organization focused on improving how Black children with dyslexia and other reading challenges are identified, supported, and affirmed.
Our work sits at the intersection of literacy, language, identity, and advocacy, equipping families, educators, and organizations with culturally affirming, research-based strategies that translate into real-world results.
At the core of our approach is the ALIGN Framework™. The ALIGN Framework™ aligns three essential elements:
* Evidence-based practice and historical strengths
* Equitable system design and implementation
* Families as informed, protective partners in decision-making (Family Protective Literacy Praxis™)
Developed by DABC, ALIGN addresses the persistent disconnect between what systems do and what students and families experience, particularly at the intersection of race, dyslexia, and literacy inequity.
Through training, family programming, and national convenings, DABC works to close literacy gaps and ensure that Black children and youth are not only taught to read but are also affirmed, supported, and able to thrive.
