Sabancı University Materials Science and Nanoengineering Program

Materials Science and Nano Engineering deals mainly with synthetic and biological polymers, ceramics and metals with applications such as bullet-proof glasses, fire-retardant plastics, superabsorbant materials, optical devices, electrical conductors, artificial skin and drug-delivery. As an interdisciplinary field, materials science and technology is closely related to diverse disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, or chemical and mechanical engineering and mechanics.

Founded in 1999 at Sabancı University, the program started to admit its first students in 2000. Since then it has rapidly evolved into becoming one of the best academic programs among Turkish universities. We have educated hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students almost all of whom continue their professional careers in top domestic and international companies, universities and research centers. Some have gone on to founding their own spin-off companies specializing in advanced technologies.

We have 11 teaching and 5 research faculty members each of whom have had a very broad experience across the top world institutions before joining Sabancı University. All of our faculty members benefit from their strong international networks specifically in Europe and North America with a focus on cutting-edge scientific activities. At a glance, the research at our program encompasses polymers, composite materials, advanced ceramics, development of new structural materials for buildings, materials for energy, semiconductors, thin films and computational studies of complex organic molecules. In order to carry out these activities, our Materials Science and Nanoengineering Program hosts the best equipment infrastructure and laboratories in Turkey in conjunction with the possibilities SUNUM and KTMM offer as thematic research centers. The equipment and research experience as well as the world class education we provide to our students put our graduates at the forefront of their competition.
