RISBAT Project

The number of batteries to be recycled in Europe is estimated to reach 420 kt in 2030, and 2100 kt in 2040. Meanwhile, Lithium-Ion Batteries have marked a significant growth driven by the demand for renewable energy storage solutions and electric vehicles.

RISBAT Project, supported by EIT RawMaterials, addresses the persistent challenge of safe and efficient management of end-of-life LIBs. Through an integrated approach, RISBAT covers collection, sorting, disassembly and reusability evaluation of end-of-life batteries.

Our consortium brings together actors across the end-of-life batteries value chain:

Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs), Re-Battery (GR), Electrão (PT), and Asociația SNRB (RO) coordinate the safe collection of end-of-life batteries and ensure that our solutions are aligned with existing regulatory systems and address real challenges of collection networks.

Hiro Robotics (IT) enhances safety and efficiency of the entire reuse evaluation process through advanced automated battery disassembly focusing on safe casing removal.

Sortbat (BE) brings its expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure to optimize batteries sorting and state-of-health evaluation, ensuring their safe handling and accurate evaluation for second-life applications.

The National Institute of Chemistry (SI) as the scientific partner will transfer the project’s findings into structured training materials, enabling knowledge dissemination across the RIS region and Europe.

SE&C IKE (GR) coordinates communication and dissemination and ensures RISBAT’s visibility and stakeholder engagement.

Through this model, RISBAT reduces environmental risks, minimizes waste, and supports Europe's green transition by increasing battery reusability by up to 40% and securing up to 50% of critical raw materials (CRMs) through second-life applications.
