İstanbul Marmara Eğitim Vakfı (İMEV) tarafından 9 Temmuz 1997 tarih ve 4282 sayılı kanunla kurulan Üniversite, 2547 sayılı kanunun vakıf ve yükseköğretim kurumlarına ilişkin yasa ve yönetmelik hükümlerine tabi bir kamu tüzel kişiliğidir.
Maltepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, her geçen gün sayısı artan bilimsel niteliği yüksek, dinamik ve genç öğretim üyesi kadrosuna sahiptir. Halen 146 öğretim elemanından oluşan akademik kadromuzda 59 profesör, 12 doçent, 41 doktor öğretim üyesi, 3 uzman doktor, 2 diyetisyen ve 29 araştırma görevlisi görev yapmaktadır.
