Since its 1976 establishment, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) has been at the forefront of the Nation’s efforts to fight waste, fraud and abuse in and improve the efficiency of HHS programs.

The majority of the agency’s resources go towards the oversight of Medicare and Medicaid — programs that represent a significant part of the federal budget and affect this country’s most vulnerable citizens. HHS-OIG’s oversight extends to programs under other HHS institutions, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration.

HHS-OIG carries out its mission using a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach. A nationwide network of audits, investigations, and evaluations delivers timely information as well as cost-saving and policy recommendations for decision-makers and the public. This network also plays a vital role in investigating and building cases for criminal, civil and administrative enforcement.

Additionally, HHS-OIG develops and distributes resources to assist the health care industry in its efforts to comply with the nation’s fraud and abuse laws and to educate the public about fraudulent schemes so they can protect themselves and report suspicious activities.
