In 1924 Harry L. Coulon, a salesman for the wholesale hardware firm

Stauffer/Eshleman & Co., ventured into business on his own, opening a

hardware store in New Orleans’ Seventh Ward, on the corner of St. Bernard

Avenue and North Robertson St. He named his business H. Coulon Hardware.

Just five years later, Harry’s fledgling store faced the onset of The Great

Depression. His vision and energy allowed his upstart company to survive and

prosper while hundreds of others were forced to close their doors.

Harry passed away in 1931, in the midst of that Depression, at the age of 45. His business, renamed St. Bernard Hardware and Supply, continued on.

Harry was succeeded by his sister, Louise Armstrong, and her three sons: Larry,

Jim, and Eddie. The business later moved to a larger building on North Claiborne Avenue, a few blocks from its original location, and again to its current Orleans Avenue headquarters in 1966.

One hundred years after its founding, “Harry’s store,” now Armstrong’s Supply

Company, continues to thrive from two locations in the Greater New Orleans

area. Scott Armstrong (great-nephew of Harry Coulon), and wife Leslie, the third-generation owners, continue to lead the company with the passion and values of our company's century-old DNA. As a proud locally-owned family business, you can expect to be treated like family.
